Electrovalent (Ionic) Compounds are formed when one atom donates an electron to another atom, resulting in the formation of oppositely charged ions. These ions are held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction.
- Donor atom: Usually a metal that loses electrons to form a positive ion (cation).
- Acceptor atom: Usually a non-metal that gains electrons to form a negative ion (anion).
- Bond formation: The attraction between cations and anions forms the electrovalent bond.
- Example: Sodium chloride (NaCl).
